Caring for your things

Using Nick’s Wax

My board wax is a mixture of food grade mineral oil and bees wax. Such finishes are not permanent and need occasional maintenance. Reapply the wax periodically to maintain the finish and protect your item. This finish never ‘cures’ and may have a slight oily feel, especially after a fresh application.

Applying the wax:

If you have ever waxed your car, you know what to do. If not, here’s some more detailed directions for you

  1. Apply a light coat with a soft cotton cloth.

  2. Allow the oils to soak into the wood for at least an hour.

  3. Apply additional to any spots that look especially dry.

  4. Buff to a smooth finish with a clean cotton cloth or microfiber towel.

  5. Repeat as necessary, as often as you like.

General Care

All Food Contact Items

Your item is pre-finished with a food safe wax and oil combination made form mineral oil, and bees wax. Use only food safe finishes on any items that contact food such as cutting and charcuterie boards. Nick Makes Things Cutting Board Wax, commercial butcher block waxes/oils, or food grade mineral oil are all good choices. These finishes are not permanent and require maintenance. Periodically add finish to your product to maintain its look, or freshen it up.

  • NEVER PUT IN DISHWASHER!

  • Avoid pigmented foods that might stain the wood.

  • Do not place hot items on any wood surface.

  • Gently wipe or wash with soft cloth.

  • Use mild dish soap only as necessary. Do Not Scrub.

  • Dry Immediately. Boards may warp or separate if left wet.

  • Wood is soft, and will dent or gouge with impacts. Treat your boards gently, and store appropriately.

  • Apply wax/oil periodically, especially if wood looks dull or dry.

End-Grain Boards

End-grain cutting boards are superior due to the orientation of the wood grain. Knife edges slide between the wood fibers causing minimal damage, and maintaining the sharpness of the knife. End-grain boards are the best choice for daily slicing and dicing, but will show wear over time. With proper care, they will last a lifetime. Follow the bulleted tips above for best results.

Charcuterie Boards

Charcuterie boards are made for looks, and are not meant for cutting or slicing on. Use as serving platters for cheeses, meats, breads, or your favorite appetizers. Cut those things elsewhere. With proper care, they will last a lifetime. Follow the bulleted tips above for best results.

Salt Cellars, Canisters, and other Items

I’m not sure you need much help here. Keep them clean and dry, and you will probably be ok. With proper care, they will last a lifetime. Follow the bulleted tips above for best results.
